Exploring the Old LA Zoo

Friday, October 23, 2015

Today is our last day in Los Angeles as our flight leaves later today.  One of the last things on our to-do list is the Old LA Zoo.

Heading to the Old LA Zoo

The Griffith Park Zoo was owned by the City of Los Angeles.  It opened in 1912 an closed in 1966 with the opening of the new Los Angeles Zoo.  The new zoo was built because the Griffith Park Zoo was receiving complaints of being inhumane and ugly. The Old LA Zoo is now a hiking trail with the old animal enclosures still exist.

During October, the area is turned into a Haunted Hayride attraction.  Sadly, this was setup during our visit, so you will see "haunting" items related to the hayride in these pictures.

The Old LA Zoo is FASCINATING to explore!  You can even go inside some of the old enclosures to see how the exhibits work and how animal caretakers were able to access the exhibits.  Sadly, very few pictures of the zoo remain, but if you do some digging online you can find a few pictures from when it was still open.  It's interesting to see and compare those pictures to these current ones.
