Hitler's Birthplace, Camp Mauthausen, & Vienna, Austria

Thursday, July 5, 2018

Today we traveled to Vienna, Austria and took a few detours along the way.  We had planned to do these the other day but roads were closed from where we were coming from and it was impossible to find another route!

First on our detour is the birthplace of Adolf Hitler, Braunau am Inn, Austria.

Entering the town

A stone in front of the house.  The stone came from the quarry at Camp Mauthausen Concentration Camp, which we will be visiting later today.  The sign is a memorial to the victims of the Nazis and states that we shall never let that happen again.

Back on the road.  This time we are heading to Camp Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

Memorial Area

There is a steep cliff hill at the camp.  As a punishment, some prisoners were pushed off the cliff to their death.  Around the area is also a quarry and massive staircase.  The staircase was closed during our visit, but prisoners would have to carry stones up and down the stairs.  If they fell, they were killed.

You can see a guard tower if you look closely on the left side of this picture.

Zyklon B canisters.  This is the poison that was used in the gas chambers.

A prisoner got this bike from a nun after the camp was liberated.  He didn't want to wait for a train to return home to Poland, so he rode the bike home.

Camp Mauthausen was an eyeopening, touching place to visit.  The museum and informational placards were very insightful.  I learned and saw so much history during my visit.  If you are in the area, I highly recommending visiting.

This is the car the Archduke of Austria was riding in when he was assassinated.  His assassination led to World War I.

Prater Amusement Park - Weiner Riesenrad

This is such a neat little amusement area.  It was destroyed during World War II.  The Winer Riesenrad, the ferris wheel, was a symbol of the city so they quickly rebuilt it; the rest came later.

A neat band was playing music near the entrance.

A small museum is set up in the que to ride Wiener Riesenrad.

It has been a great two days in Austria!
