We are in Europe for two weeks to visit several countries. We flew into Munich today and will be visiting Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, and Czech Republic over the next two weeks.
Munich Airport
On the road to Austria. Munich will actually be the last stop on our trip.
We ran into so many tractors on the road, even more than you see in the southern US!
Austrian Border
Entering Salzburg
Our rental car during this trip, a Ford Mondeo
The view from our hotel balcony
Streets of Salzburg
We decided to stop at McDonald's for dinner on our first night. We are both tired!
This McDonald's had waffle fries. They were quite good! I must say McDonald's here is so much better than in the US. It reminds me of McDonald's as a child - freshly cooked and much better tasting than today.
They call the drive-thru here a McDrive.
Stopping by the grocery store on the way back to the hotel
We found our first Vienetta Ice Cream Cake of this trip. These are favorites of ours!
Cigarette machines are everywhere in Europe
Walking the streets of Salzburg
Stiftskeller, possibly the oldest existing restaurant in the world
Entrance to St. Peter's Cemetery
St. Peter's Abbey Watermill
The Birthplace of Mozart
Taking the railway up to Hohensalzburg Fortress
On the road to Bertchesgaden, Germany for a tour of Hitler's Eagle's Nest
The water was amazingly clear blue.
Waiting for the tour bus to arrive
Heading up to Eagle's Nest. The views were incredible.
Sights of the Bavarian Alps
Arriving at Eagle's Nest
Waiting on the elevator
Views from the Eagle's Nest
This fireplace was most likely a gift from Mussolini.
Pieces of the fireplace were chipped as souvenirs when Allied Forces arrived.
Allied Forces also wrote inscriptions into the fireplace.
These are markings on the door to Eagle's Nest that were left by Allied Forces when they arrived.
Entrance and tunnel to Eagle's Nest
The past two days have been an exciting start to our trip! Bertchesgaden is a beautiful town, and seeing the Bavarian Alps has been amazing. They are breathtaking and just what you expect them to be. Eagle's Nest was a little disappointing, if I am being honest. I expected it to be bigger and to be able to see much more, but it is quite small and there really isn't much to see. There is a restaurant inside now, which occupies the majority of the building. Other than the restaurant, there is a small room you can go in and a corridor you walk through. Walking through the tunnel and seeing inscriptions left by Allied Forces were the most interesting parts.
